Step 1: Declutter Before Organising
You cannot organise your way out of having too much stuff. The most effective small closet organisation starts with removing at least 30% of what is currently in it. Try everything on or assess honestly: worn in the last 12 months β keep. Has not been worn β donate or sell. The remaining space will organise itself much more easily.
Maximising Space β Practical Solutions
- 1
Add a second hanging rod for short items
Most closets have one hanging rod at the top, wasting all the space below hanging shirts. If you hang shirts, jackets and other short items, install a second hanging rod below the first β you double your hanging capacity for no significant cost. A portable hanging rod ($15β30) clips onto the existing rod.
- 2
Fold items vertically, not in a stack
Stacked folded items hide everything underneath and the pile collapses when you take something out. Folding items into small rectangles and standing them vertically in drawers or on shelves (KonMari file-folding method) means you can see every item at a glance and removing one does not disturb the rest.
- 3
Use the back of the door
An over-door shoe organiser ($15β25) adds 20β30 shoe or accessory pockets without using any floor or shelf space. Use it for shoes, bags, scarves, belts, cleaning supplies β anything that fits in the pockets. An over-door hook rack adds hanging space for bags, hats and robes.
- 4
Add shelf dividers for organised sections
Shelf dividers prevent stacks of folded items from toppling into each other and define clear zones on each shelf. Acrylic dividers ($15β25 for a set) are effective and look clean.
- 5
Use slim velvet hangers
Switching from bulky plastic or wooden hangers to slim velvet hangers ($15β25 for a pack of 50) can increase hanging capacity by 30β50%. They also prevent clothes slipping off. A major upgrade with minimal cost.
- 6
Store out-of-season items elsewhere
Winter coats, thick jumpers and seasonal items stored in your main wardrobe take up prime space all year. Store off-season items in under-bed storage bags, suitcases or a separate wardrobe to free up prime accessible space for what you actually wear now.
