Stovetop Oatmeal (Best Texture)
- 1
Use the right ratio: 1:2
1 cup rolled oats to 2 cups liquid. Use water for a lighter result, milk for creamier oatmeal, or half and half for a balance. For one serving, use half a cup of oats to 1 cup liquid.
- 2
Bring to boil then reduce heat
Combine oats and liquid in a saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then immediately reduce to a low simmer. Add a pinch of salt β this enhances all the other flavours significantly.
- 3
Simmer 5 minutes stirring often
Stir frequently to prevent sticking. Cook for about 5 minutes until thickened to your liking. Remove from heat β it thickens further as it cools.
- 4
Add toppings and serve immediately
Oatmeal thickens quickly β serve straight away or stir in a splash of extra liquid to loosen before topping.
Microwave Oatmeal (2 minutes)
- 5
Use a large bowl β oats expand
Combine half a cup of rolled oats, 1 cup water or milk and a pinch of salt in a large microwave-safe bowl. Use a bigger bowl than you think β oatmeal bubbles up aggressively.
- 6
Microwave 2β3 minutes on high
Microwave on high for 2 minutes. Watch it β stop if it starts to bubble over the sides. Stir, then microwave another 30β60 seconds if needed. Leave to stand 1 minute before eating.
Types of Oats β Which to Use
- Rolled oats (old-fashioned): Best texture, 5 minutes stovetop. Most versatile.
- Quick oats: Pre-cut thinner, cook in 1β2 minutes. Softer, slightly mushy texture.
- Steel cut oats: Most texture and nutrition, 20β25 minutes. Nutty and chewy.
- Instant oats: Just add hot water. Convenient but the least satisfying texture.
