The Deep Clean Process β€” Top to Bottom

  1. 1

Start with the exhaust fan and ceiling

The most forgotten part. Wipe down the exhaust fan cover with a damp cloth (vacuum the grill first). Wipe the ceiling corners for any cobwebs or mould. Starting at the top means any drips fall onto surfaces you clean afterwards.

  2. 2

Apply shower/bath cleaner and toilet cleaner β€” let them dwell

Spray the shower walls, bath and tiles generously. Apply toilet bowl cleaner under the rim. Let everything soak for 5–10 minutes while you clean other surfaces β€” the cleaner does the work, not your scrubbing.

  3. 3

    Clean mirror and cabinet

Spray mirror with glass cleaner or white vinegar. Wipe with a microfibre cloth in S-shaped strokes (not circular β€” circular leaves smears). Wipe down the cabinet door and any shelving inside. Use an old toothbrush for door hinges and corner details.

  4. 4

    Scrub shower and bath

Now the cleaner has soaked, scrub the shower walls and bath. Focus on grout lines, tap fittings and the drain area. Use an old toothbrush around taps and the shower head. Rinse thoroughly.

  5. 5

Clean the toilet β€” outside first, then bowl

Wipe down the outside of the toilet (tank, lid, seat both sides, base and behind) with multi-surface spray and a cloth. Then scrub the inside of the bowl with a toilet brush, paying attention under the rim. Flush.

  6. 6

    Clean sink, tap and bench

Spray and wipe the sink, bench and tap. Use a toothbrush around the base of the tap and the drain area β€” this is where soap scum and mould accumulate. Shine the tap with a dry cloth for a streak-free finish.

  7. 7

    Mop the floor last

Sweep or vacuum first to remove hair. Mop with a bathroom floor cleaner. Pay attention to the base of the toilet and behind the door β€” often-missed areas. Let the floor dry before walking on it.

Often forgotten areasBehind the toilet. Inside the toilet tank lid (check annually). The exhaust fan cover. Inside and behind cabinet doors. The shower head (soak in vinegar in a plastic bag tied around it for 30 minutes to remove limescale). Behind the toilet cistern. The edge of the bath where it meets the wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Once a month for a full deep clean with all the steps above. Weekly quick clean: toilet bowl, sink, wipe down surfaces and spot-clean the shower β€” takes 10 minutes. Daily: squeegee the shower walls after use and wipe the sink after brushing teeth. These habits drastically reduce the time and effort needed for the monthly deep clean.
For light staining: apply white vinegar, leave 5 minutes, scrub with a stiff brush. For stubborn staining: baking soda paste plus hydrogen peroxide, leave 10 minutes, scrub and rinse. For severe or mouldy grout: oxygen bleach solution (OxiClean). Seal grout once a year to make future cleaning much easier β€” sealed grout repels water and stains.
