Why Shower Glass Gets So Dirty
Soap scum is a combination of soap, body oils, dead skin cells and minerals from hard water that bond to glass and become increasingly difficult to remove over time. The key is regular maintenance β the longer it is left, the harder it is to shift.
Regular Cleaning (Weekly)
- 1
Spray with white vinegar
Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar. Spray generously on the glass and leave for 5β10 minutes. The acidity breaks down mineral deposits and soap scum.
- 2
Scrub and rinse
Scrub with a non-scratch sponge or microfibre cloth in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Dry with a microfibre cloth to prevent water spots.
Removing Heavy Buildup
- 3
Make a baking soda paste
Mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda with enough dish soap to form a thick paste. Baking soda is a mild abrasive that removes stubborn deposits without scratching glass.
- 4
Apply and leave
Apply the paste to the glass with a cloth or sponge. Leave for 10β15 minutes.
- 5
Scrub with a non-scratch pad
Scrub in circular motions with a non-scratch scourer. The paste will lift away even stubborn scum. Rinse thoroughly.
Glass Coating for Easy Cleaning
Once clean, applying a water-repellent glass coating (like Rain-X or a dedicated shower glass product) causes water to bead and run off rather than sitting on the glass. It dramatically reduces cleaning frequency. Reapply every 3β6 months.
