Why Shower Glass Gets So Dirty

Soap scum is a combination of soap, body oils, dead skin cells and minerals from hard water that bond to glass and become increasingly difficult to remove over time. The key is regular maintenance β€” the longer it is left, the harder it is to shift.

Regular Cleaning (Weekly)

  1. 1

    Spray with white vinegar

Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar. Spray generously on the glass and leave for 5–10 minutes. The acidity breaks down mineral deposits and soap scum.

  2. 2

    Scrub and rinse

Scrub with a non-scratch sponge or microfibre cloth in circular motions. Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Dry with a microfibre cloth to prevent water spots.

Removing Heavy Buildup

  1. 3

    Make a baking soda paste

Mix 3 tablespoons of baking soda with enough dish soap to form a thick paste. Baking soda is a mild abrasive that removes stubborn deposits without scratching glass.

  2. 4

    Apply and leave

Apply the paste to the glass with a cloth or sponge. Leave for 10–15 minutes.

  3. 5

    Scrub with a non-scratch pad

Scrub in circular motions with a non-scratch scourer. The paste will lift away even stubborn scum. Rinse thoroughly.

Prevent buildup with a squeegee30 seconds with a squeegee after every shower removes 90% of the water that causes mineral buildup. This is the single most effective thing you can do to keep shower glass clean long-term. Keep a squeegee in the shower permanently.

Glass Coating for Easy Cleaning

Once clean, applying a water-repellent glass coating (like Rain-X or a dedicated shower glass product) causes water to bead and run off rather than sitting on the glass. It dramatically reduces cleaning frequency. Reapply every 3–6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

No β€” glass is not affected by vinegar. However, be careful with stone tiles or natural stone surfaces in your shower as vinegar can etch some types of stone. Keep it on the glass only.
For very old, severe hard water stains try a commercial calcium and limescale remover. Apply, leave for the recommended time and scrub. In extreme cases, a professional window cleaning company can restore even heavily etched glass.
