Quick Regular Clean (5 minutes)

  1. 1

    Vacuum first

Use the brush attachment on your vacuum to remove loose dust and cobwebs along the top and face of the baseboard. This prevents turning dry dust into muddy streaks when you wipe.

  2. 2

Wipe with a damp microfibre cloth

Wring a microfibre cloth until barely damp. Run it along the top edge and face of the baseboard. The microfibre grabs dust better than cotton cloths.

  3. 3

    Dry immediately

Follow with a dry cloth to prevent moisture marks and streaking. This is especially important on painted or varnished boards.

Deep Clean for Grimy Baseboards

  1. 4

    Make a cleaning solution

Mix a few drops of dish soap in a bucket of warm water. Alternatively use a multi-purpose household cleaner diluted as directed.

  2. 5

Scrub with an old toothbrush for corners

Use an old toothbrush to get into the joins between the baseboard and wall, and into any decorative grooves. This is where grime accumulates most.

  3. 6

    Wipe clean and dry

Wipe off the soapy solution with a clean damp cloth, then dry immediately.

Keep them cleaner for longerAfter cleaning, run a dryer sheet along the top of the baseboard. The anti-static coating repels dust and they stay cleaner for much longer. Repeat after each clean.

How Often to Clean Baseboards

Most households: every 1–3 months depending on dust levels. Homes with pets, carpet, or in high-traffic areas: monthly. Add baseboard cleaning to your regular cleaning routine when you vacuum β€” it takes under 5 minutes per room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use a barely damp cloth β€” excessive water can cause paint to peel or swell the wood. For stubborn marks on white paint, a Magic Eraser (melamine foam) works well without chemicals. Always dry immediately after.
A Magic Eraser removes scuff marks from painted baseboards very effectively. For wooden baseboards, try a small amount of white spirit on a cloth. Always test in a hidden area first.
