Three Ways to Check a Gift Card Balance

  1. 1

    Online — retailer website (fastest)

Visit the website of the store whose gift card you have. Look for a “Gift Cards” link in the navigation or footer → then “Check Balance.” You will need the card number (on the front) and usually the PIN or security code (on the back, often under a scratch-off panel). Major Australian retailers with online balance checkers: Woolworths, Coles, JB Hi-Fi, Target, Kmart, Dan Murphy’s, Myer, David Jones, Bunnings, eBay gift cards.

  2. 2

Phone — call the number on the back

Most gift cards have a customer service number printed on the back. Call it and follow the automated prompts. Have the card number and PIN ready. The automated system will state your remaining balance.

  3. 3

In store — ask at the register

Take the physical card to any store of that retailer. Ask a staff member or cashier to check the balance. They can scan the card and tell you the current balance. No internet required.

Gift card expiry in AustraliaAustralian consumer law requires most gift cards sold on or after 1 November 2019 to have a minimum 3-year expiry period. Gift cards purchased before this date may have shorter expiry. Check the expiry date on the card and use it before it expires — expired gift card value may be unrecoverable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Usually not online — the PIN is a security measure to prevent fraud. However, in-store staff can often check the balance without the PIN by scanning the card. If you have lost the PIN of a gift card you bought, contact the retailer’s customer service with proof of purchase — they may be able to provide the PIN or transfer the balance to a new card.
Use it as partial payment — most retailers allow splitting payment between a gift card and another payment method. Mention to the cashier that you want to use a gift card for part of the purchase. Online, there is usually a “Add gift card” option at checkout where you enter the card number and any remainder is charged to another payment method.
