Settings β†’ Network and Internet β†’ Data usage

Go to Settings (Windows key + I) β†’ Network and Internet β†’ Data usage. This shows total data used over the last 30 days and breaks it down by app β€” you can see exactly which programmes are using the most data.

  2. 2

    Set a data limit

On the Data usage page, click Enter limit to set a monthly data cap. Windows will warn you when you approach the limit β€” useful if you have a capped internet plan.

  1. 3

    Activity Monitor β†’ Network tab

Open Activity Monitor (search in Spotlight). Click the Network tab. This shows real-time data sent and received per process β€” useful for identifying what is using bandwidth right now. For cumulative usage, use a third-party app like iStatistica or Little Snitch.

Check Usage on Your Router

  1. 4

Log into your router admin page

Type 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 into a browser. Log in with your router credentials. Look for a Traffic Monitor, Data Usage or Statistics section β€” this shows total usage for all devices on your network. Not all routers have this feature.

Which apps use the most data?Streaming video (Netflix, YouTube, TikTok) is by far the highest data user β€” 4K streaming uses 7–25GB per hour. Video calls (Zoom, FaceTime) use 1–2GB per hour. Music streaming uses 40–150MB per hour. Cloud backup (iCloud, Google Photos) can use significant data in the background β€” restrict these to WiFi only in your settings.

Network congestion β€” many ISPs share bandwidth between households in a local area. Peak hours (evenings 6–11pm) see the most congestion as everyone streams and games simultaneously. This is normal and not a fault with your service. If your speeds are consistently slow even off-peak, contact your ISP.
