Removing the Band

  1. 1

Turn the watch face-down on a soft surface

Place the Apple Watch face-down on a clean cloth to avoid scratching the display.

  2. 2

Press and hold the band release button

On the back of the watch, you will see two small oval buttons — one on each side of the band slot where the band connects. Press and hold one button firmly. While holding it down, slide the band out sideways (horizontally, not pulling away from the watch). The band slides out smoothly. Repeat for the other half of the band.

Attaching a New Band

  1. 3

Align and slide in until it clicks

Hold the new band with the text on the inside facing you. Slide it into the slot in the same direction it came out (sideways). Push firmly until you hear and feel a click — this means the locking mechanism has engaged. Give the band a gentle tug to confirm it is secure before wearing. Repeat for the other half.

Band Sizing and Compatibility

  • Two case sizes: 40mm/41mm (smaller) and 44mm/45mm/49mm (larger). Bands are sized to case — a 44mm band will not fit a 40mm case.
  • Band compatibility: Apple Watch bands are cross-compatible across Series 1 through Series 9 and SE within the same size category. Ultra and Ultra 2 bands are a different width and only compatible with each other.
  • Third-party bands: Many affordable third-party bands use the same quick-release mechanism and work identically to official Apple bands.
Band not clicking in?Ensure you are sliding from the correct direction. The band should slide in smoothly — if it requires force, it may be the wrong size, upside down, or not properly aligned with the slot. Check the band release button is fully released before attempting to insert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Within the same case size (40/41mm or 44/45mm), yes — all Apple Watch bands since Series 1 use the same quick-release mechanism and are interchangeable. Apple Watch Ultra bands (49mm) have a wider lug width and are only compatible with Apple Watch Ultra models. Always check the band size matches your Apple Watch case size before purchasing.
Remove the band from the watch before cleaning. Sport bands (fluoroelastomer): wipe with a damp lint-free cloth and mild soap, rinse thoroughly, dry completely before reattaching. Leather bands: wipe with a dry cloth only — avoid water and soap which dry out leather. Metal bands (Milanese loop, Link Bracelet): wipe with a damp cloth. Fabric/woven bands: spot clean with a barely damp cloth. Never use compressed air, harsh cleaners or submerge any band in water.
